Irving Berlin wurde 1888 in Russland geboren und zog 1893 mit seinen Eltern nach New York. Er starb 1989 im Alter von 101 Jahren!

Erving Berlin begann seine Karriere als Zeitungsjunge und singender Kellner, er wurde dann Komponist und Texter und gründete einen eigenen Musikverlag. Er komponierte Schlager, Musicals, Filmmusik - insgesamt etwa 900 Songs.  

"Alexanders's Ragtime Band" ist ein sehr populärer Schlager des "Pseudo-Dixieland" (so steht es im Reclam's Jazz-Lexikon). Die Melodie ist sehr eingängig - die Melodie verbreitete sich so rasch, dass Irving Berlin fälschlicherweise als Ragtime-König gefeiert wurde...
